Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 8 Seoul Lantern Festival

I went to the Seoul Lantern Festival! It was being held at cheonggyecheon stream near Insadong. This stream is such a beautiful walking path. There are so many couples everywhere though!! Rightfully so, it really is such a romantic place. The scenery is gorgeous, there are other couples everywhere, plus you could get to know each other once you are walking down this path. It takes about 1 hour to walk down the path one way.

Directions:

Go to subway station Gwanghwamun station then take exit 5. Walk straight for a couple of minutes and you will see it on the left.

It's getting super cold here in South Korea!! I can't believe how freezing it can get and the wind is brutal! I will try to vlog/blog more often.

Here are some pictures of the night.

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 7 Deokjeokdo Island

We went on a trip with Seoul Hiking Group. It was our first time going with the Facebook group and it was so much fun. There were some bad moments like a crazy bus driver, people being lazy, and some of the food was no that great BUT I still had a wonderful time and we met so many wonderful people that we have kept in touch with.

The island itself is a little secluded. It took up about an hour and a half on ferry to get there from Incheon. When we got to the island we hiked up to the other side and there was only about 30 people on the beach so it was super fun. We made a bonfire, ate smores, danced, drank... all of which was great.

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 6 Busan

Busan was AMAZING. I really enjoyed being a bum on the beach for three straight days. It was the life! Unfortunately a lot of things were closed because it was a holiday. Chuseok is the Korean "thanksgiving" so everything ended up being closed. We didn't get to actually go inside the opera house nor shopping :(. Even so, it was still so much fun and I really want to go back.

Yes we even had a wonderful view while eating Burger King! haha

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 5 Hongdae

Hongdae is a great place to party! This is definitely the place to go if you just want to party all night. There is a university (Hongik University) in this town so everything is catered towards young adults.
You can begin the night by going to the Hongdae Children's Park. This is a great meet-up place as there are so many people here playing music, standing around talking, having rap battles... you name it! There is so much going on in this park that you can spend easily 2 hours there. I recommend meeting your friends here and then heading out to a club.

Directions to Hongdae Children's Park:

  • Exit 9, Hongik University Station (Subway Line 2).
  • Go 150m straight, and cross the street.
  • Turn left, and go 500m straight towards the Hongik University entrance.
  • Turn right to arrive at Hongik Children's Park

  • Then we headed to Club 2M. This place was super fun. It was a rave type club but everyone was just having a blast non-stop dancing. There is confetti blasts thrown at you, lights galore, and you get several different glow sticks throughout the night given to you.

  • Directions to Club M2:

  • Get off at Hongik university station(Line 2) and take exit 9. Walk straight onto the wide street on the left. Turn right after 2 small blocks. Keep going straight on the street with many restaurants and cafes. Cross the street and keep going straight toward Sangsang Madang(상상마당). Turn right at Sangsang Madang and turn right again after 1 block (Saemaul Sikdang(새마을식당) is on the corner) You will find Club M2 on your left.

  • We then stayed at Happy Day Spa (Jjimjilbang) and that one is located at:

  • If you leave the Hongik University subway from exit 9, walk straight along that street until you get to the Marigold Hotel building on your left. The jjimjilbang is down one level.

  • The Jjimjilbang is very interesting... on weekend nights it's about $15. The spa is separated by women and men but the common area is co-ed! So be careful! I woke up with some Korean guy's arm around me...haha it was innocent but it really woke me up startled.

  • But seriously Hongdae is super fun! If you get the chance you should definitely go!

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 4 Everland

EVERLAND WAS SO MUCH FUN! My friend Viviana and I spent about 7 hours there and we didn't get to see everything! There is so much to do there. I really wish that we had more time. By the late afternoon though we were really tired and our phones had died. There really isn't a place to charge our phones so take an extra battery!!

The place is huge so be prepared to walk!!!

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 3 streets of Seoul, Job info and more Mexican food!

This weekend was amazing! Saturday I hung out with Viviana, the Mexican I met from a meet up and her friend from El Paso, Stephanie. 3 Mexicans speaking Spanish in Seoul must have attracted others to us because Stephanie has been living in Korea for 2 years and not once has something like this happened around her. Every 15 minutes someone would come up to us and IN SPANISH as where we were from. It seemed like everyone in Korea was able to speak Spanish that day. It was bizarre! I loved it!

We had some more great Mexican food, this time from Taco Amigo in Itaewon. It is right outside Exit #4 at Itaewon station. You just walk up the street and you'll see it on the right. It's a very simple restaurant and it was much cheaper than Vatos Urban Tacos. BUT, I have to say that I like Vatos more... I really like fusion food. Don't get me wrong I will be back to Taco Amigo many times... It is great comfort food. But when I need a good date or something, I will be heading to Vatos.

I also went to Insadong to Gyeongbokgung Palace. It was beautiful. I will make a video about that soon and about N Seoul Tower.

For now, here are a couple of pictures.

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 2 Bongeunsa Buddhist Temple and Mexican Food

Camera still sucks... I'm using my phone for this! Sorry in advance...

RANDOM coincidence but I ate FANTASTIC Mexican/Korean fusion food and as it turns out Vatos Urban Tacos was started by a Texan! Woooo go Texans :)

Seriously though, it was amazing food. Expensive but amazing.

Also I went to a close by Buddhist temple they are gorgeous! I am not religious but it was still great to check out.

I also went to the Seoul Arts Center to see the Edvard Munch collection - gorgeous! But since they didn't let me film or take pictures I only have these few pics:

Anyway, will try to blog about once a week.

    Thanks for checking this out!!!

Hispanic in Korea - Diary Vlog 1

Hello, My name is Sonia Melendez. I am a Mexican-American from Austin, Texas. There was a moment in my life where I found myself in a routine lifestyle and panicked. I had a wonderful job making ethics videos at The McCombs School of Business in The University of Texas at Austin but I think I began to realize that I didn't want that to be it. I had only ever travelled on vacation and was envious of people who actually lived abroad... so I decided to do it! I heard about the opportunities that English teachers receive abroad and since I already loved Korean culture, I decided to go to Seoul.

I hope you enjoy my adventures! In this vlog I talk about my first impressions of Korea, what Koreans think about Hispanics and Foreigners that don't speak Korean.

Let me know if there's anything in specific you would like me to record about!

The age of confusion for women

    Still from "Break The Box"
I do not envy young women growing up in this generation. In part, some of it is positive, although let me preface this blog by saying that it is 2014 and a shame that we even need these efforts in the first place... but sadly we do and I'm glad that there are some great companies promoting feminism and being a strong woman. There is “always” with the commercials about “What does it mean when someone says “like a girl.”” In this brilliant commercial they ask little girls to throw, run, and kick like a girl… and they give it their all. Then they ask adolescent women to do the same thing… and they act weak or insulting… Their whole point being when does “like a girl” become an insult?
    That is awesome.

Then there is Verizon, with their whole #InspireHerMind, showing us what happens when we do not allow girls to be curious about the sciences, and things that boys are "supposed" to be into. They slowly become disinterested in the subjects altogether! We, as a society, are discouraging women from entering any type of field that is “meant for a man.” Watching this commercial actually made me depressed… because I know this one is a hard subject to approach and one that may not change anytime soon. Regardless, it is nice to see some companies trying.

Another great commercial is the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault – Break The Box. This one tries to challenge all gender stereotypes – it’s great! It’s really well put together and makes me want to make a change when I see it.

These are all great things and are very powerful messages that hopefully will take effect... BUT and this is a big but… we have all these great efforts in conjunction with really, really negative stereotypes. What makes it worse is that it is becoming normal to use these “bitch” stereotypes. I was perusing Facebook one day and came across a quiz that most of my friends have taken entitled “How bitchy are you?”     WTF?

I took this quiz just to see what they thought would qualify (as if there is anything that would actually give validation for calling someone this) someone as a bitch. It was simple things like getting angry at traffic, flagging down a waiter/waitress after 10 minutes of not being noticed, someone cutting in line… Are you trying to tell me that my genitalia is sufficient enough that if I get angry at normal stuff like this – the annoying things that EVEN MEN get angry at – that I would be considered a bitch if I actually voiced my anger???

If that were not enough,  I saw this on a blog – E! Entertainment actually had an actual award for this category on television. “Best Baddie and Bitch.” If I were an evil man I would just be slapped on the wrist and called a “Baddie” or even be idolized… but as a woman I am a “bitch?”

When did this term become normalized enough to use in frequent social media outlets and awards? Why is there blatant double standards still in existence?

It’s no wonder that it’s become more and more difficult for women to be themselves… we are getting mixed signals everywhere! If we so much as show an emotion other than grateful happiness we are automatically forsaken and thrown into a negative category!

This indeed is a confusing time to grow up and I really hope that girls will be smarter than advertisers and side with those that are actually promoting their well-being, otherwise the inequality will continue to grow. So please, stop promoting negative stereotypes and STOP BEING OKAY with it! It's NOT okay to discriminate against women in this way, especially when it's used as a double standard.

    I Promise

I know that I am especially guilty of saying, “I promise” without even looking at what other things I have going on. What happens when you realize that you actually can’t keep your promises?
    Photo from liveitdoit.com

For me, I get overly anxious and cannot believe I have to back down on my word… but maybe it shouldn’t get me too worked up – the worst-case scenario is that the promisee will be upset for a while... but at least you were honest. Let’s be honest, most times the person is COMPLETELY FINE with you rescheduling or "letting them down". So why is it in our nature to over worry about things like this? Most times this causes us to lie without merit! We should never lie about something that was out of our control; it would only make things worse.

Recently I was told that my blood type (A) makes me into this worry-wart… “While outwardly calm, they have such high standards (perfectionists) that they tend to be balls of nerves on the inside.” (Waking Times) I don’t know how much astrology, biology, and whatever else people believe in, factor into our personalities but I just know that I need to learn how to loosen up!

What has helped me to remain calm and be open with people is remembering that people are not in control of every situation. Sometimes things will happen; most times they are random acts of nature that we cannot help whatsoever! People are loving and accepting by nature just trust that breaking one promise is not going to be the end of the world, nor your relationship with that person.

Mantra: Just breathe. Don't lie and accept your situation.

STOP and smell the rain! Or the roses... whatever

Things that make me happy (in no particular order):

    1. Watching squirrels eat (their chubby cheeks are too adorable)
    Adorable photo from Hudo.com
    2. Listening to music while I do absolutely nothing
    3. Walking on luscious green grass barefooted (my nickname was bear for awhile because I loved to roll around in grass)
    4. The smell of rain
    5. Admiring beautiful nature sights
    6. Walking at night while looking at the stars
    7. Cuddling in bed when it is cold
    8. Petting my cat (she has taken the habit of wanting to be pet 24/7!)
    9. Drinking a glass of wine
    10. Talking on the phone with my friends and family

There is a purpose to my seemingly random list of benign vices and that is to ask… How often do you do something that makes you happy on a daily basis? I know that my sister constantly has to remind me to take time to smell the roses because I am a workaholic and will work day and night if it weren’t for my basic human needs getting in the way! But it is so simple!

Today I was forced to sit outside until the rain calmed down because I forgot my umbrella. As I sat there I closed my eyes and took several deep breaths. It was so invigorating and peaceful! I cannot believe that all day I had not felt the beauty of nature – especially something so simple as sitting outside and smelling the rain (although one of my new favorite people recently told me that he does not know what rain smells like! I thought everyone loved the smell of rain!). You get the point though – I think as human beings we tend to be selfish about many things EXCEPT daily little pleasure moments for ourselves. Imagine if you do several things on your little list of things that make you happy how much better off we would be as human beings? I drove home road rage free after that. It was just so peaceful that it put me in a good mood.

Don’t ignore your happiness especially if you can do small things like smell the rain, or for people that don’t specifically like that, the roses.

    Wife-beaters and Bitches

I was watching Saturday Night Live with Louie C.K. and he brought up something that has made me think. He mentioned how unbelievable it is that we have an article of clothing named after the beating of one's wife... and how NO ONE is offended by it.

There's more to that, I have been thinking about all the pressures that women have to endure. I know I know, another woman rant! But see that's the point. I hear people jokingly call women naggers, emotional, and even bitches.... and no one is ever outraged. We, as women, have so many ideals that are expected out of us. In fact the world has created a whole species of walking contradictions. We are meant to be sweet, nurturing and quiet... yet not boring. I don't understand all of these social constructs... that's enough for a woman to go crazy already! However, to add on to it women call each other bitches all the time. "Oh shut up bitch. Isn't she being a b**ch?" This may seem harmless but we are only perpetuating all of those social constructs. We as females cannot get along anymore. What happened? There are so many studies proving that we reduce stress by talking to our fellow female friends... but then why are we doing the exact opposite of what we were born to do?
We are constantly fighting each other instead of helping each other rise. BECAUSE OF OUR SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS! We are taught since little girls, subconsciously to hate other females. Think about it! Men have sports and organizations that build brother hood since childhood. What do women have? We have individual competition like beauty pageants and Disney movies that idealize finding LOVE over independence. Yes, yes, I freaking love Frozen and I know that this movie is the exception. But it's not just Disney... I am a film major so it pains me to admit that movies use women as props further making us into unworthy individuals who seek men for this sense of "worth."

So ... you will not hear me call anyone a bitch. And if it accidentally slips, know that it makes me deeply sad inside that I too have conformed to this pressure and disgusting social construct that we live in where women are still not equal... By far we were raised to be jealous of each other. Think of how much love we can give to the world if we only helped each other instead of competed with each other...

Next time you think about calling women naggers, emotional or a bitch remember... she has a lot of pressures she is trying to measure up to...

    Ethics Unwrapped

I am so very PROUD of the project that I have been working on. Please check it out!

I was hired by McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin to edit a series of ethics videos. The end result: Ethics Unwrapped. It is a wonderful series with some great art in it. I have been very fortunate to be apart of the project. I have been editing, animating, and creating graphics for this wonderful series.

Our website is meant as a teaching tool for those trying to teach ethics. We have teaching notes to accompany each video we have made. The best part... IT IS ALL FREE!

If you have time please check out my favorite video so far:

Even though I will be leaving this wonderful job in August - to persue other interests - I have been very lucky to be apart of this project and I wish Ethics Unwrapped the best of luck. My boss is the most wonderful person in the world and I know Ethics Unwrapped is in great hands.

    Beauty is everywhere

This is one of my favorite pictures from back home. Hereford, Texas is a really small town and to be honest... I never really fit in. Even though I was ready to leave the day I could walk... I still found beauty in it.

Clearly my love and appreciation of art was not nurtured in Hereford, but I don't think that it was hurt either. Sure bigger towns would have given me the opportunity to explore my creative side in school much sooner... but you know you get what you can.

There is beauty everywhere all you have to do it look for it.

    Age

In dedication to my sister's birthday...

    Age.
    A number.
    A measure.
    A standard.
Age does not define you but it can confine you.
Age cannot tell ones personality but it can sure wear it down.
Age is more than a number...
    It's a ticker
    for laughs
    for love
for the happiness one can express in a lifetime.
How fast it ticks is entirely up to you.
